Hubs Not Hulks: An Answer To School Closings

Dear Friends,

On our newly launched website --- www.educationactiontoronto.com ---
we now have a set of Power Point Slides by David Clandfield that ask
the question: Can hubs be a practical alternative to school closings?
These slides are based on a presentation to the Social Planning
Council of Toronto on September 25, 2009. In this presentation, David
argues that if schools are integrated into a community development
plan, and if the result is that community life is more closely
connected with the school's curriculum, then hubs can, indeed, become
a socially progressive feature of both urban planning and education.
When supported by strong local government with access to a local tax
base, hubs can become a real alternative to school closings and the
sell-off of public assets.

We hope you will go over David's argument carefully, and let us know
what you think. In the light of provincial plans to close hundreds of
Ontario schools, it is essential that this conversation linking the
development of school hubs with the end of school closings be taken on
across the province.
