A Message from Education Action: Toronto September 27, 2009 Dear Friends, For those of you who live or work in Etobicoke North, Education Action: Etobicoke North is asking you to join them in putting together a strong local alliance between their parents, teachers and community. We hope you will attend the meeting EA:EN has called for Wednesday, October 7. Their message is below. For those of you don't live or work in Etobicoke North but would like to help, you will be warmly welcomed. In solidarity, George Martell and Faduma Mohamed A Message from Education Action: Etobicoke North Join us for an important parent, teacher, community meeting at 6 pm on Wednesday, October 7, at the Elmbank Community Centre 10 Rampart Rd. Toronto M9V 4L9 (at the end of a long driveway east off Martin Grove, just north of John Garland). We are coming together to create a new vision for Etobicoke-North affectionately called 'Rexdale' ... 'Jamestown'... and sometimes 'Thistletown'. We believe its time to form a coalition of like minded individuals right here in the community, who will ground themselves in the principles of social justice and build a movement that will create pathways out of poverty for the families of this diverse and culturally rich neighbourhood. Since the inception of Education Action: Etobicoke North, we have knocked on thousands of doors and spoken to many of our neighbours. The message we continually hear is that we need to stop the bottom streaming of our children, the school must be the hub of the community, and parents want to be more involved with the running of schools run locally. They see teachers as a key resource and ally, but don't know how to engage with them on a very 'real' way. Finally, jobs and the environment are key issues that the school system must take into consideration each day our children start their school day. Wednesday, October 7th, 2009 will be the beginnings of a new conversation based on old challenges, but this time we will create the vision and solutions needed to move forward. We look forward to seeing you on October 7th, 2009.
In solidarity, Nigel Barriffe and Fowzia Mahamed |
