A Message from Education Action: Toronto

June 18, 2009

Dear Friends,

On Wednesday, June 24, the Toronto District School Board is being set up by the Ministry of Education to enter into another 3 years of education cutbacks totaling $121 million. That will make 15 years of cuts in a row. This year the projected cuts started at $39.3 million. It's become, as Hugh Mackenzie writes, an education crisis not just a budget crisis.

On Wednesday we all have to be at the Board to say NO these cuts. And if that leads the province to impose a supervisor, we can use the time to organize our school communities and make the province wear these cuts and the destructive impact they will have on our children.

The meeting starts at 4:30 p.m. and will go on for a long time. Get there when you can and bring a sign.

We've attached a flyer, which we hope you will download and send out to your friends when you encourage them to come to the protest.

We also attached a rough analysis of the current fiscal crisis of the TDSB. It has been put together quickly from a number of sources. We wish it was more precise and more complete, but it does give you a sense of the financial hammering the Board has been taking all these years and the crucial role the Education Ministry's financial formula has played in cutting off the necessary funds for a decent school system.

We hope to see on the 24th.

     In solidarity,
